Trending Colors For AW22, According To Annie Sloan

Color plays a crucial role in making us feel good. As we close the year and begin to dust off our Christmas decorations, now is the perfect time to wrap up any final decorating projects — and tap into autumn/winter’s trending hues whilst we still can.

‘Everything is very intense at the moment politically, so I think we need something calming and cooling,’ Annie Sloan, founder of Chalk Paint™, tells House Beautiful UK from her London home. ‘But we can’t be using grays and whites anymore, as we’ll just keep depressing ourselves.’

Fiery reds, burnt browns and zesty oranges are the hues we often associate with autumn (it is pumpkin season after all), but Annie recommends welcoming spirit-lifting colours, such as pastels, through our paint choices and accessories.

Autumn/winter 2022 color trends

‘We also want some joy,’ Annie adds. ‘For autumn and winter, I think we’re going to embrace strong colours, maybe even pastels. It could be putting yellow with red and orangeor even with pinks and blues. I think we’ll be doing a lot of colour.’

Even if you’re not in a position to redecorate, a simple scatter cushion or textured wall hanging in a vibrant hue will do just the trick.

From the bedroom to the kitchen, clashing colors make a bold and energizing scheme. Not sure where to start? Annie, who bravely painted her own hallway green, yellow and pink, suggests: ‘Do one little thing step-by-step, then you can freak out and think it’s terrible. But more and more, it will be great.’

And for those who are brave with decorating, consider painting your ceiling a bold color to enhance the overall feel of your space. ‘Ceilings are fantastic,’ says the Chalk Paint™ founder. ‘Don’t forget to paint the dado rails and underneath the dado, too.’

2023 color trends at a glance

So what about the trending colors for 2023? ‘I do think that red is going to come along, as well as yellow, pinks and orange. An orange wall is absolutely fantastic and you can fill it with pictures and plants. People are using that more and more, which I really love,’ Annie predicts.

Autumn/winter is a key season for color predictions as some of the UK’s leading paint brands unveil their ‘It’ colors for the forthcoming year. Tapping into the appetite for bold red hues, Graham & Brown’s Color of the Year 2023 is Alizarin, an auburn red shade, inspired by the beauty found in natural earthy tones. Meanwhile, Dulux’s hero color for 2023 has been announced as Wild Wonder, a soft gold barley shade that helps us to reconnect with nature.
